Dolby Atmos and Xbox Series X|S Audio

The Xbox Series X and S are finally here! I know that the ASTRO Family has a lot of questions and we are doing our best to get you all the answers you need about your gear and the new consoles. Today I want to discuss Dolby Atmos, how it works with ASTRO products and EQ presets on the Xbox Series X|S. I want to first point out that we have answered some of the more general questions about the new consoles in our Next Gen Compatibility blog, and are working on a more detailed FAQ for both PlayStation and Xbox. I hope to have them ready for you soon. With all of that out of the way let’s talk Dolby.

ASTRO Gaming and Dolby have been partners for a long time, longer than I’ve been with the team (over 10 years now). We at ASTRO have always believed that Dolby provides a premium audio experience for gaming, movies, and many other forms of entertainment. Dolby has set the standard for surround and simulated surround sound in gaming since the introduction of the Xbox 360 and since has only raised the bar with products like Dolby Atmos. If you are not familiar with what Atmos is and how it differs from legacy channel based audio like 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound we wrote a blog about it a few years ago and there are many great videos on YouTube that can help you understand why we love this technology.

Dolby Atmos is the future of gaming audio and is available on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S as well as Windows 10 PCs. To get access to Dolby Atmos you will need to purchase a license for $14.99 USD, unless you have an Xbox/PC Edition Gen 4 A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR or A50 Wireless + Base Station, then you would have gotten a card with a code for a free 2 year subscription in your product packaging. Gen 4 MixAmp Pro TR and Gen 4 A50 Wireless owners won’t need the subscription code anymore but I’ll get to that in a bit.

What ASTRO Gaming products work with Dolby Atmos? The answer to this question is simply “All ASTRO Gaming products that are compatible with the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or Windows 10 PCs are compatible with Dolby Atmos.” I know it’s long for a “simple” answer, but I have to be thorough. This is pretty broad though so let me break it down for you.

There are two ways to get access to Dolby Atmos on your Xbox:

  1. Buy a license through the Dolby Xbox or Windows 10 app. You would need to do this if you own an ASTRO A10, A20, or Gen 3 MixAmp / A50 or older. This will allow you to turn on Dolby Atmos on your console and access it using your headset.
  2. If you own a Gen 4 MixAmp Pro TR or Gen 4 A50 Wireless + Base Station use the following instructions to get access to Dolby Atmos for free!

Xbox Instructions

  • Turn on the Xbox, navigate to the Store and download + install the Dolby Access App.
  • Connect your ASTRO device to the Xbox and set the mode switch on your MixAmp or Base Station to the “XBOX” setting.
  • Open the Dolby Access application from your Xbox dashboard.
  • Navigate to the settings menu and verify that Dolby Atmos has been enabled. Once enabled, choose a listening mode and EQ preset, or create your own.
    • You can verify the Dolby Atmos license is active because the ASTRO logo will display in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    • Your Device ID will also display in the upper right corner of the screen.

Windows 10 Instructions

  • Turn on the Windows 10 PC, navigate to the Windows Store and download + install the Dolby Access App.
  • Connect your ASTRO device to the Windows PC and make sure the mode switch on your MixAmp or Base Station is set to the “XBOX” setting.
  • Open the Dolby Access application on your computer.
  • Navigate to the settings menu and verify that Dolby Atmos has been enabled. Once enabled, choose a listening mode and EQ preset, or create your own.
    1. You can verify the Dolby Atmos license is active because the ASTRO logo will display in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    2. Your Device ID will also display in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Set the mode switch on your MixAmp or Base Station back to “PC”

How are you getting Dolby for free on our Gen 4 products? We have worked with Dolby to allow our products to be automatically detected by the Dolby Access app so you can access Dolby Atmos no matter where you are. If you are using your gear on a friend’s console, at an event or LAN or just signed in to another family member’s account you will always have access to surround sound on your PC or Xbox as long as the Dolby Access app is installed and configured.

Where are my EQ presets? That’s a good question. When using your MixAmp Pro TR or A50 Wireless + Base Station on a PC your EQ presets will function normally. You will be able to adjust them to your liking using the ASTRO Command Center app found in the Windows Store. On Xbox Series X|S you will need to adjust the EQ settings in the Dolby Access app. When you have set up your EQ it will apply to everything you do on that console while your MixAmp or A50 is in use.

I hope this helped you understand a bit more about Dolby Atmos on ASTRO Gaming products.

Cheers,

T.
