Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
Let’s get to the part I’m excited to talk about, which are new game titles. We have more unique, yet familiar, gameplay coming from Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. This is the latest version of the Final Fantasy brawler. With 3v3 matches and new characters such as Noctis from Final Fantasy XV the game publisher, along with help from companies such as Amazon, is hoping that the fresh and polished look can captivate new players and returning players alike. Koei Tecmo and Amazon will be running an interesting promotion to get the word out about the game as well as giving away prizes to those who pre-ordered the game. You can find more information in the video below.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Finally I would like to talk about one of the most anticipated games to come out in 2018: Dragon Ball FighterZ! I’ve been playing the betas and demos at tournaments where accessible. From EVO 2017 to the Open Beta that ran on January 13th – 15th, I’ve strived to gain as much information and put in as much time as possible into the game. My conclusion is that it will be one of the biggest titles in 2018. Running on a similar engine to BlazBlue the new game is ready to throw down. Iconic characters such as Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu make their way into the game along with some new characters from the latest Dragon Ball series: Dragon Ball Super. Unlike the previous Dragon Ball fighting games the game uses a similar formula to the Marvel vs Capcom while adding a whole new flair to it. You’ll see classic sequences if you defeat Frieza with Goku or if you beat Cell with Gohan. Clashes when characters enter in after a teammate has fallen in combat, cinematic styled supers, combos that can extend thanks to assists, Bandai Namco helped Arc System Works craft a well oiled game while keep true to the source material. The game is slated to release on January 26th, 2018 and closing out the first month of the year with a big bang attack.
Genesis 5: Premier NorCal Tournament
The popular NorCal tournament for all things Super Smash Bros is back once again. Genesis 5 is here and being hosted in Oakland instead of San Jose. The best of the best are once again ready to pick up the sticks and throw down. I’m personally looking forward to some four stock chants, wombo combos in doubles, and of course the grueling grind in singles. To know the storylines of this year we need to turn the clock back a year ago. In 2017 Genesis 4 marked the beginning of the previous year with goals in mind for many top players in both Smash Bros scenes. Armada held down his throne by defeating Mang0 in Grand Finals and taking well over $10,000 to the bank for Alliance and his family in SSB Melee. This was only the beginning of his 2017 run. Meanwhile in Smash 4 it was the rise of MKLeo who took the tournament over Ally and ZeRo, a trend that many thought would persist through the 2017.
This year Genesis 5 brings new players hungry to take the thrones in all the Smash games. Players like Salem who mains Bayonetta (Bayonetta Series) and Tweek who uses Cloud (Final Fantasy 7) have risen to the challenge. Even more important is that the king himself ZeRo has decided to end his competitive career and will not be participating in the tournament. It makes you wonder who will take the title in Smash 4. Meanwhile the Mang0 Nation believes that “The Kid” will return to former glory and swipe the 2018 tournament title from Armada in Melee. Genesis 5 is also adding Splatoon 2, Street Fighter 5, and Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite to the tournament. This helps bring Smash and the FGC closer together.
Thanks for reading, ASTRO fam! See you next month!
