Multichannel vs. Object-Based Audio

Have you ever wondered about the differences between object-based audio versus channel-based audio? What’s the next big thing in audio production? It can be a confusing (but very important) topic. Don’t worry, though. We’re here to enlighten you.

Michael Jessup, Global Head of Product Marketing at ASTRO Gaming, is back with another explanation to help you parse the nuances between both types of audio production, what they’re used for, and delivering multichannel experiences when speaking of linear audio and non-linear audio.

As Jessup explains in the video, linear audio encompasses things like TV shows, movies, and media in which the sound will match and play back exactly the same at the exact same time, every time.

Non-linear content includes one of our favorite types of media here at ASTRO Gaming: video games. Each time you play your favorite game, you’ll have audio that’s a little different based on your actions. Your soundscape will vary depending on what you do, so it becomes non-linear.

How does this translate to multichannel and object-based audio? Channel-based audio is a thing of the past, and everything is slowly moving toward object-based audio.  Because the optical port is being removed from newer consoles and because more and more games are adopting this new standard, we’ve headed that way with our products as well. We’ve tuned all of our MixAmps and our headsets to be compatible with object-based audio rendering systems.

If you’re curious about what this all means and need it explained in a way that makes sense without too much jargon, sit back, relax, and take in the full video. You might just learn a thing or two. Actually, scratch that — you will learn a thing or two.

Then, take what you’ve learned and peruse our selection of fine headsets and accessories. You’re going to want to be ready for anything the latest crop of games throws at you, after all. And as always, if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments section over on YouTube. We’ll catch you in the next video.
