If you are gunning for maximum frame rate in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold war on your PS5 then there are a few key settings you will need to change both in-game and in your PlayStation system menu, as well as a few hardware considerations to make in your setup.

Note: In order to achieve 1080p / 120 Hz, you must be using a display and input that supports 1080p at 120 Hz.

Let’s get started.

  1. Ensure you are using the PS5 version. To do this, in the PlayStation 5 menu, select Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War and press the Options button. Select Game Version from the menu, and set it to the PlayStation 5 version of the game if it is not already.
  2. Launch Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (PS5 Version)
  3. In the main menu, press the Options button to open game settings.
  4. Press R1 to navigate to the Graphics tab.
  5. Set the Ray Tracing option to Disabled.
  6. Exit the game, and close the application. To close the application, select it from the PlayStation 5 menu, press the Options button, and select close game.
  7. Navigate to the System Settings menu for your PlayStation 5 which is the gear icon in the top right of the Home Screen.
  8. While in the settings menu, scroll down and select Saved Data and Game/App Settings
  9. Select Game Presets
  10. Set the “Performance Mode or Resolution Mode” option to Performance Mode
  11. Once again, run Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (PS5 Version)
  12. Your game should now be running in 120 Hz mode. To verify this, you can navigate to the game settings menu by pressing the Options Button on the main menu, navigating to the graphics tab by pressing R1 and check that the 120 Hz refresh rate option is enabled. (Note: this option will be greyed out and can only be changed by changing your system level game preset preferences mentioned in steps 7 – 10).

To reiterate, in order to achieve 120 Hz refresh rate, you will need to have a display which supports this option. You will also need to ensure that you are using an HDMI cable that supports 120 Hz and are connecting with an HDMI port on your display that supports 120 Hz (not all ports support high frame rates, and some monitors only support high frame rates over DisplayPort, not HDMI). You also will need to consider any additional equipment in your setup that could be limiting your frame rates, such as an A/V receiver or capture card, and the cable + port they use.

You can read more about supported HDMI resolutions and frame rates with the ASTRO HDMI Adapter for PlayStation 5 in our HDMI Adapter Frame Rates, Resolutions, and You blog.
